The best part of their week

For those of you we are not able to catch up with a regular basic in person, I wanted to share that the girls are in gymnastics.  My parents and my aunt and uncle (Thanks Jaye and Harry, Mom and Dad) bought it for the girls for their birthdays (July and December).  They participated in September, October and November.  They both absolutely love it. They both just jumped right in and tried all these new things and had a blast doing it.  I am very proud of how well they joined in, especially not knowing anyone in their classes. Now I find them jumping around our house and contorting their bodies on a regular basis.
They hop down the hall.
They walk invisible balance beams.
They do cartwheels and round offs as they come to the dinner table.
They watch TV with they feet up by their ears.
Jazz hands are everywhere in our house.
They love it and I love it!!

I highly recommend Metro Gymnastics.  The staff is delightful.  My girls think they are the most important child in that building...and so does every other student.  The teachers are young, but have great guidance from the owners.

Going for a back handspring.

And from here, they did push ups.  I should make them do this as punishment for bad behavior!
Wahaha!!

Mid flip.

Gymnastics has been a great thing for my girls.  I am thankful we have had the opportunity to do it for a season.  And thanks to the kindness of others, we are able to participate for 2 more months.  But that is another blog entry for another time...don't want to use all my stories right off the bat this year. ;)

More great sayings of the year -2011 edition

February - The girls came in asking for a snack. I listed off the following options: apple, banana, grapes, celery, carrots. Piper says "hmmmm....I think I will have a quesadilla."

2/14/11 - Josh and the girls have had secrets for a couple weeks now. I hate it. None of them are good at secrets. OK, Josh is, but not with B&P around. I assume this has to do with my March birthday, but can't be sure. Tonight (Valentine's Night) we are eating dinner and Piper says "It isn't a secret any more." Josh and Bren freeze, Josh waves his hand and mutters something, then says "Nope, the card isn't a secret anymore." Piper starts to speak again and Josh cuts her off. I state how much I hate secrets and Josh "covers" by talking about the card. All was quiet for a second or two when Brenna states in a low voice (while cramming pancake in mouth) "Big Surprise coming!!!" Josh can only laugh.

School Pics

I should probably pace my blog come back a little better, but I know Grammy and Granddaddy want to see these as soon as possible.

July 2011

This is just confirmation that Lesley Proctor takes great photos.  As cute as these girls are, they sure are stiff in the official school picture! In the July session, some of their smiles are flat, but their eyes sparkle!

Birds IN Paradise

Halloween was another success.
After many, many conversations, the girls finally settled on a costume. Brenna chose a peacock and Piper chose a swan.  At first I was a little overwhelmed by the prospect of how to pull that off, but after an inspiring visit to Hobby Lobby with my Mom and some design suggestions by Piper, I knew I could do it.  And the girls never doubted it for a moment, which really only adds pressure!

Overall, I loved these costumes.  The girls felt beautiful and had a wonderful time each time they wore them.  Can't ask for more than that!
Our first Halloween festivities was Storybook Forest, which is always a delight.  This time Grandma and Grandpa joined us, but no one had a camera.

Then we took in the OC Dorm Trick or Treat tradition.  I'm learning start early in an effort to beat the rush.  It was crazy, but not as crazy as some years.

Sunday night was great time with our church Trunk or Treat.  I appreciate that some of our great spiritual leaders can get silly with our children.  I'm not sure who enjoys this more!
Halloween night, we enjoyed games, delicious food and Trick or Treating with some new, yet dear friends.

With the exception of one chainsaw wielding, coffin toting, scream producing police officer's home, we wouldn't have changed a thing!!

As Pipes looked at the ridiculous pile of candy, she said, "Just looking at this makes my tummy hurt!"
Halloween 2011= success!

Sleepy Hollow Festival

Over the Fall Break weekend, we visited my folks and participated in their 1st annual Sleepy Hollow Festival.  For the most  part, it was sleepy, we still managed to have a great time...and put a little money in our pockets from the crafty crap stuff we sold.

The girls spent the entire time Friday and Saturday out playing.  It was wonderful to be in this small community and feel the safety I felt when I was a child.  They were carefree and loving it...so was I.
I think the highlight of the day was the Foam Pit.  See for yourself....

We are SO doing this at Relay For Life of Edmond 2012!!

Well, Hello...where ya been?

It pains me to not be keeping up with this blog.  Actually, it pains me that it no longer pains me to not be keeping up with this blog. :(  While my excuse is valid, our reality isn't changing anytime soon, so it is time I adjust.

I don't dare try to catch back up, so I"ll start with the here and now.

Today is Crazy Sock and/or Crazy Hair day at school (for Red Ribbon Week.)

Piper didn't feel like crazy hair today, so she just focused on the crazy socks.  Aren't they rockin'.  Let the outfit be indicative of  what the sock looks like, because the socks really bring the outfit together.

Brenna opted not to participate in the crazy sock option of the day because she is way into her sock of day collection.  Since this child hates the transition from Summer to Fall, I'm just happy she has socks ON!!  She did however, rock the Crazy Hair part!

Unplugged

For those who have not heard me complaining previously, our home computer crash. Crashed hard. We had/have an offsite back up system so I am not worried at all about our data, but for now (until we decide we just want to spent a boat load of money that could/should go other places) we are VERY limited on our "screen time". Blessing and a curse, I suppose. However, if all my loyal readers would donate a couple of bucks to our fund...I could afford a grande slappe mappe frappe from Starbucks to drown my sorrows in. :)

But, for now, I have stolen a few precious moments at a random computer left lying around a wifi spot to update this sadly neglected blog.

As I type, I am wavering between laughter and tears.
It would appear both our girls had memorable nights at church.

Bren shared that her teacher got sick and threw up in the trash can, leaving someone else to clean up that mess and the mess of however many wound up, grossed out 7 & 8 year olds were supposed to be putting on a puppet show this evening.

And Piper... well, Piper and her friend got stuck in the elevator.
After kissing their little faces and watching them head up the stairs, I left to go to my class and never had a second thought. It wasn't until Josh was picking the girls up from class (one hour-ish later) that we discovered that the girls had, in fact, only gone up SOME stairs before turning around and heading to the elevator. (I don't think the stairs was a deception as much as the elevator was an after thought.) So. The girls get on the elevator and press "1". As no surprise to a grown up, the elevator did nothing because it was on the "1" floor. It didn't move. The doors didn't open. Nothing dinged. No lights flashed. It did nothing. I am sure the girls were giggling and telling each other all kinds of tales of their day at school when they realized there was not much action going on on the elevator. After a brief discussion of the lack of movement, the girls got a little nervous. They looked at their options (never considering button "2" as an option) and sounded out the word H.E.L.P. on the red button. They pressed it. And then there was action. Kind of. It just wasn't action they knew about.
1) The lights went out.
2) Unbeknownst to the 5 year old duo, a security company was alerted.
3) Still unbeknownst to the girls, the church was notified of the 'emergency'.
4) Proper church authorities made their way to that side of the building.
5) Proper church authority pressed the up arrow button from the outside of the elevator.
6) The doors opened.

Apparently, immediately after step 1, the girls began screaming and banging on the doors trying to get help. After step 6, two red faced little girls emerged from the elevator and shared their harrowing tale with their hero, person from step 5, and skipped off to class, happy to be freed and, seemingly, unscarred.

Perhaps as the story was retold to parental units and those parental units reacted in an appropriate, but concerned, manner, the duo began to feel the magnatude of their adventure. Piper was telling me the details after prayers and stories tonight (You better believe God heard about the elevator, as well). She told me that when the light went out she heard a woman's voice (I'm guessing it was a recording) say something about an emergency, then a man's voice asked them how many were in the elevator. She said that he talked to the for a little bit, but didn't know how long and couldn't remember what he said. Then she said the first thing she heard when the doors opened was "Whoa, I didn't expect to see two kids!". She thought that was funny because "of course, an adult wouldn't get stuck in the elevator."

Lesson learned...take the stairs. Always takes the stairs!

International Experience

We are still having a great time with YuNa.  She is busy throughout the day with English classes and has evening activities about 3 days a week, so I feel our time is really limited with her.  But we are making the most of it.

One night Josh was working late, so YuNa fixed dinner for me.  We had gone to the Asian District and bought some foods she missed from home and she shared from her stash.

I am proud to say, I ate these Ramen noodles with chopsticks and was told I did a great job!!  The girls took their obligatory "no thank you" bite and politely chose to eat chicken nuggets instead.

At one point the girls decided YuNa should experience a makeover/massage.  It usually starts out nice (massage, foot rub with lotion, scalp rub), but goes downhill fast.  And almost always ends with blue eye shadow.  YuNa got the full treatment.  She literally cried out when she saw herself in the mirror.  Funniest part of her visit to date!!  But she returned the favor to each girl.

 Tic Tac Toe

This is Pipes listen to YuNa's mp3 player.  She was listening to Korean music and doing her best to sing along.  I laughed so hard I cried listening and watching this.

I have said before that I am glad the lack of knowledge of lyrics doesn't impede Pipes love of singing!  Never more evidence of that than singing along with Korean Hip Hop.
YuNa has a friend from her school that came on the trip as well.  God placed Eun Jin (prefers the American name Ericka) in the home of some friends of ours from church.  It has been wonderful to be able to experience this together and sometimes share the responsibilities.
I think this has been a great experience for our family and if given the opportunity, I think we would sign up again!

Haircuts and updates

Summer is quickly coming to a close and other than the heat, I don't think any of us are ready for it!  We have had a great summer.  Kristen has been an amazing babysitter, filling their days with great activities and laughter.  The girls will greatly miss her this fall.  I'm thankful that she has not only entertained them, but helped them learn some lessons along the way.  She has been great at taking advantage of teachable moments, which I think is pretty remarkable for a 17 year old.  I don't think any of these lessons have been really overt, but I hear Brenna speaking about her in a way that lets me know Brenna is listening and watching her intently.  I need to let Kristen's parents know they are doing a fine job raising her!!

Huh...I didn't know that is where I was going with this post. Oh well, it needed to be said.

The girls got their hair cut yesterday.  Brenna knew she wanted her short.  She has been ready to cut it all off again for a while.  Piper decided she wanted to grow it out like Rapunzel, THEN cut it short.  Well, she saw B's hair and decided she couldn't wait!  I reminded her of her goal, but she had already changed her mind.  In the end, neither of them could be any cuter and we all love the new haircuts.

While grabbing a few things at the store last night, something happened that involved Pipes loosing her shoe, her falling down, Josh stepping on her foot and her arm getting "broken".  Piper always things something is broken when she is hurt.  Well, she has taken it to new levels.  After asking for a cast for hours, I got a scarf and created a sling for her "broken" arm. She could not have been happier with that pink and green scarf supporting her injured arm.  In fact, she was so happy, she put it on first thing this morning.

We ran into our good friend, Alyssa, at the grocery store (Yes, we were there just the night before.  That happens to me a lot.) and she asked Piper what happened.  Piper said, "I"m pretending I broke my arm."

I gotta credit her honesty.

The latest adventure

A few weeks ago, our family decided to host an exchange student for 4 weeks through a program at one of our local universities.  Our only requests were that we could have a girl and, since they are so young (13-16), we wanted to get a student that would feel comfortable coming to church with us.  So, we were selected to host Yu Na.

We were able to send her a letter before she came, telling her a little about our family.  She wrote us an email and included the above picture. (I assume that is her mom with her.)  The only thing we knew this time yesterday was her name, her country (Korea), her age (14 - four.teen.! Just think about that for a minute...wow!), and she hates cucumbers.

She arrived in the US last night and we met the group at the university.  We made a sign so she would know who we were.  It just happens that yesterday was Brenna's birthday.  She was thrilled that Yu Na was coming on that day. (despite how she looks in the picture)

Here are all the students before they leave to their host homes.  Don't they all look so young?!?!

Here we are with another host family (whom we attend church with) enjoying our first meal together at...
Pei Wei!  Yu Na is sitting beside Piper.  Just for the record Yu Na ordered Spicy Korean Chicken. ;)  We all played with chopsticks but most had to revert to the fork before the meal was over.

We had a wonderful evening at home.  We were low key and tried to allow Yu Na some time to acclimate to our home/life.  The girls were a wonderful ice breaker for all of us.  Before I knew it, we were all gathered around our coffee table learning and teaching new things to each other.  and laughing.  Laughing is universal.

Plan B often works out just as well as Plan A

A good friend of ours is working on his Masters of Fine Arts in theater and is doing a production of "The Secret Garden".  I asked several friends if they wanted to take their kids and it turned out only 3 families were able to go.  We loaded up and drove waaaaayyyyy south yesterday morning.  Well, apparently word got out on how good this play was, because when we got there, the show was sold out.  Like absolutely no seats left.  And there were 9 of us.
This is the crew on our way into the play.

Plan B
We were sad that we weren’t able to go see the play, but were really happy that Chad had such a great turn out.  We made the best of it and made “Plan B” at the Museum of Natural History nearby.  Of course, the boys in our group were totally thrilled at this announcement.

The kids had a fantastic time going from one exhibit to the next.  I don't think the kids learned anything, but I am confident they all had a blast.  And it was great to be able to visit with some friends we don't get to spend as much time together as we'd like.

I love, love, love Piper in this pic!!

These are two of the sweetest "not babies anymore" I know!!  They are both always so stinkin' happy!

We finished up by invading Slim Chicken for lunch.

Overall, Plan B turned out to be a lot of fun. Next time, I'll plan ahead a little better and reserve tickets for Chad's productions. He is the next best thing. :)
